Mechanical Advantage & Efficiency of Double Reduction Crab Winch

Winch machine are lightweight and compact, the winch is equipped with a load pressure brake system to lift the load irrespective of lifting height. This brake is also useful for controlling the speed of the load and is free from maintenance. These are categorized as follows:

  1. Double Reduction Crab Winch

Double Reduction Crab Winch

A compound gear train is employed to attain a high-velocity ratio since the intermediate gears are compound wheels attached to the same shaft as the main gears. 

Let,

T1 and T3 are the number of teeth on the pinion.

T2 and T4 represent the number of teeth on the spur wheels.

l denotes the length of the lever.

d is the diameter of the load spindle.

W = weight of the load lifted

P denotes the effort put out to raise the weight at the end of the handle.

The distance moved by effort for one lever rotation is 2l, while the distance moved by force is 2πl.

The number of rotations performed by the spur wheel of the load spindle may be estimated by treating the situation as if it were a compound by train.

So the number of rotations performed by the pinion-1 is equal to one.

And the number of rotations produced by the wheel-2 = T1 / T2 = the number of revolutions made by the pinion-3.

And the number of rotations performed by the wheel is 4 = T1xT3/T2xT4 = T1xT3/T2xT4

The distance traveled by a load = d x T1xT3/T2xT4

When calculating V.R., use the formula 2l/d * T2xT4 / T1xT3

It is possible to determine the efficiency and mechanical advantage of the (Double Reduction) Crab Winch by using these mathematical calculations.

Mechanics Advantage (M.A.) is defined as W / P.

Efficiency, η = M.A. / V.R.

Process of Crab Winch Operation

  • First, stabilize the (Double Reduction) Crab Winch and wrap the rope around the load drum and the effort wheel.
  • Put some weight on the load drum to make it more stable. Additionally, by using the hanger, some effort may add to the effort wheel.
  • You will notice some movement in the load drum and the effort wheel if you hit the machine with a piece of material.
  • After that, repeat the method four to five times, progressively increasing the weight and effort applied to the load drum and effort pulley, if needed, to get the desired result.
  • Take the radius of the load drum and the radius of the effort wheel and multiply them together.
  • Calculate the machine’s M.A., V.R., and values.

It reduces the amount of time it takes to complete a task and increases productivity. Both sides of the driving shaft have heavy-duty working handles of the appropriate length, which helps in evenly distributing the weight.

However, the crab winch is a manual crab winch. So you have to roll it manually. Which consumes more time and human energy. Therefore you can use an alternative crab winch which is an electric winch machine. When you plug it in, they start automatically.
